La Finca de Hamberto
La Finca de Hamberto is a 28-acre BIPOC-led farm and sustainable agricultural hub in Vieques, Puerto Rico, operated by Community Through Colors (CTC). The farm is dedicated to rebuilding a resilient, sustainable farming community by supplying fresh produce to local restaurants and markets, supporting beginning farmers with resources, and offering educational programs on regenerative agriculture. CTC also integrates renewable energy projects, including solar and hydrogen power, into the farm’s operations.
With a $5,000 grant, La Finca de Hamberto purchased and installed a caterpillar-style grow tunnel to expand production capacity and better meet community needs. “The hoop house construction is finished, and we are on track for a heavy harvest of salad greens this season,” shares Beth Straight of CTC. The tunnel will support production of 50–100 pounds of produce weekly, serve approximately twenty restaurants, continue
The farm has achieved USDA organic certification for its crops. The grow tunnel now uses shade cloth instead of plastic, providing optimal protection and airflow for leafy greens while meeting food production regulations. This setup allows for successful cultivation of non-spicy leafy greens such as bok choy and lettuce, alongside arugula and mustard, enhancing both yield and community impact.
